French Vocabulary 5 False Cognates to Watch Out For Megan L. Cognates are words that sound similar and can mean the same thing across different languages. However, in French, there are some tricky cognates that dont mean what you might think they mean. French tutor Carol Beth L. shares five common French false cognates Due to their similar roots, French and English share some vocabulary and grammar. La table is table, la geographie is geography, and un film is a film â" otherwise known as a movie. Similar word pairs between two languages are known as cognates. Not all such similar words mean the same thing, however, so watch out, or some pairs may trick you! These false cognates â" also known as âfalse friendsâ sound alike but dont actually mean the same thing. Here are a few notable examples. 1) Une librarie Would you normally expect to pay to use the books in une librarie? In France, yes. Une librarie is a bookstore, while a library is une bibliothèque. 2) Football Football sounds a lot like the American sport âfootball.â Like football, football is also in fact quite popular in France. But when the French play football, there are no yardage lines on the field, and the field goals have nets and no poles â" because in fact the French word football actually refers to âsoccer.â Our version of football is called le football américain, or American football. 3) Attendre Attendre sounds like the English verb âto attend.â Logically, jattends le concert would mean âIm attending the concert,â right? Well, not quite. Attendre actually means to wait, so, jattends le concert actually means âIm waiting for the concert.â So if attendre doesnt mean to attend, how do you say to attend in French? The French verb is assister. If you want to say you are attending the concert, say jassiste au concert. âBut wait,â you say. âThat sounds like the English verb to assist meaning to help.â Not quite. So then what about to assist or to help? This one actually makes some sense. The French verb is aider, and you can actually see the word âaidâ (also meaning to help) in its root. Je taide dans ton jeu de football, translates to âIll help you in your soccer game.â 4) Actuellement Actuellement, je fais mes devoirs. Of course youve probably guessed by now that this sentence doesnt mean youre actually doing your homework â" except it kind of actually does, indirectly. This sentence quite simply says that youre doing your homework right now, because actuellement means currently or right now. After all, if youre doing them now, you are actually doing them, right? At any rate, both meanings make sense in many situations, so someone who doesnt realize the distinction might not catch on to their mistake in conversation. If you really want to say actually and truly that youre doing something, try using en faite (actually) or véritablement (really / truly). 5) Blesser In French, blesser means to wound or hurt someone, not to bless them. So be careful; if you want to look out for their physical and spiritual well-being, it might be wiser to ask a priest, rabbi, monk, or other spiritual leader for a bénédiction (a blessing). Or you can use the verb bénir (to bless) to express what youd like him to do. These are only a few examples, but nonetheless take heed! French can be easier than some languages because it has some similarities with English, but it can also be tricky. When in doubt, look it up, and dont let any of its false friends trick you! Youâre expanding your breathing capacity while training your muscles to ration out the available air â" an important tool for singing phrases of varying lengths. 3. Add a tone. Repeat the same exercise as #2, but this time, allow your voice to create an easy, free-flowing and descending tone for the duration of the exhale. It should sound like the descent of a siren blaring in the distance. You are now teaching your vocal cords to sync with your air supply. The Ottomans traded with China in the far east and with Venice in Italy â" and they benefited hugely from the flow of expensive goods, including silk, dyes, and spices, throughout Asia Minor. The Ottoman conquest of Yemen, for example, brought Turkish control of the regionâs coffee, which, when sold in the Egyptian capital, made Cairo an incredibly prosperous city.Many of the Empireâs conquests were attempts to gain control of different trade routes. The Turkish navy controlled much of the Mediterranean, whilst overland they pursued trade wars with Russia. As Portugal was attempting to build its presence in the Indian Ocean, the Ottomans fought determinedly to maintain their influence there. CultureThe years under Suleiman were an incredibly fruitful time for Ottoman art. Huge developments took place in Islamic calligraphy, poetry, painting, music, and ceramics. Mathematics, chemistry, and philosophy were al l practiced, and it is thought that a lot of the surgical instruments we use now in medicine were invented by the Ottoman Turks.The architect Sinan has been credited with changing the face of the Middle East under Suleiman, whilst European artists â" such as Titian and Bellini â" spent time in Istanbul too.ReligionThe enmity and distrust felt between early modern Europe and the Ottomanâs was in part based on religion: Europe was aggressively Christian whilst the Turks were Muslim.Whilst the Ottoman has now been recognised as being a very religiously liberal regime, there were many horror stories at the time regarding the role of Islam. Much literature and propaganda were disseminated â" such as Shakespeareâs play Othello â" which spread suspicion of Islam.The Turkish were thought to have forcibly converted many Christians to Islam, and the devshirme system took prisoner twenty percent of male children from the Christians that were captured. They were converted and used as sl aves or trained in government.Suleiman, however, was both a religious and political leader. He developed lots of primary schools for religious and literacy education, and the title of Sultan included responsibilities as the protector of Islam. Unlike in most of Christian Europe, Jewish people had a very important role in Ottoman society, and they were actively encouraged to come to Istanbul.Keeping Power: The Ottoman Style of GovernmentIt is well worth thinking about how exactly the Ottomans survived for so long â" and how their techniques of government enabled a single family to rule for nearly seven centuries!The Ottoman government was known for its strong centralisation and stability. Whilst this was a testament to the strength of the royal family, the dynastic continuity came with a murderous side â" as royal sons plotted against each other to ensure succession for themselves.A common legend about the Ottomans is that the Sultan would often disguise himself to exit from his pa lace, Topkapi, and check on officials â" to ensure that everyone was performing his duty correctly. He also surrounded himself with knowledgeable statesman. However, the Sultanâs word would be final.Alongside the central strength of the absolute monarchy, the Ottomans maintained power â" and spread their reach through the conquest of new lands â" with an incredibly strong army. This has been thought to have been populated largely by slaves â" yet the skill and knowledge of the military and naval leaders made the Ottoman armies feared and renowned.The Decline of the Ottoman EmpireLike all great empires, the Ottomans in Istanbul finally lost their grip on power and on the people that they dominated. But, in this case, the process of deterioration continued for centuries.Lepanto, 1571A major turning point for the Ottoman Empire was in 1571 when they fought and lost a major naval battle with the Holy Roman Empire at Lepanto. Following the magnificent reign of Suleiman, this event suggested to all the world that the Turkish navy was no longer invincible.Some two hundred Turkish boats were destroyed, along with forty thousand men being killed. This number included many of their most brilliant naval officers â" and this signalled the end of Turkish domination in the Mediterranean. Thousands of Christian prisoners were also freed.The Battle of Lepanto was a major defeat for the Ottoman Empire.Vienna, 1683After this battle, which historians think started the Empireâs decline, the Turkish seventeenth century was marred by a number of military defeats. The most significant of these was probably the Siege of Vienna in 1683, which ended in failure.This was the second attempt by the Ottomans to capture Vienna (with the first in 1529), but this particular failure halted Turkish attempts to conquer further land in Europe. This tactical decision meant that the Turks failed to accumulate further land, and the Empire started to stagnate.Other Factors for the Fall of the OttomansMilitary failures besides, there were further factors that consolidated the decline of the Ottoman Empire.European domination of the New World meant that Ottoman belligerence was less problematic for these Christians, as they became much less dependent upon the trade routes that the Ottomanâs controlled.The Ottoman policy of liberal trade meant that the Empire never really itself produced the resources it needed. Rather, its imperial strategy was characterised by what has been called âshort-termismâ: after conquest, it took the resources from the new land and moved on, rather than investing for the long term.Central political control finally weakened, with rebellion and revolt weakening political authority over all of the territories that the Empire controlled. This was exacerbated by a number of incompetent sultans throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.The Empire finally ceased to exist at the end of the First World War, which they fought on the side of the Germans. Existem vÃcios de linguagem e erros recorrentes que não são ultrapassados de uma hora para outra, sem falar que estudar um idioma sem dar a devida atenção à prática leva a que a fluência em uma conversa seja fortemente prejudicada.Digo isto porque estudo e trabalho com Inglês há anos, mas nem sempre me senti à vontade falando o idioma. Muitas vezes cometi erros crassos provenientes da falta de prática, que levaram a que o meu discurso fosse mais complexo do que precisava ser ou que a mensagem que queria passar fosse alterada pelo uso incorreto de um verbo, por exemplo. Para mim, o cenário só se alterou e a vergonha só desapareceu quando comecei a ter um contato mais elaborado com o Inglês, quando comecei a falar regularmente com nativos ou outros estrangeiros, cuja a primeira lÃngua também não era o Inglês, é que p assei a ter maior consciência da verdadeira importância de conversar, mesmo que sobre assuntos triviais, no idioma que estamos aprendendo.Claro que diversos cursos tradicionais apresentam o seu currÃculo como tendo componente de conversação. No entanto, dentro de um ambiente controlado, com vários alunos e sem tempo suficiente para deixar cada pessoa desenvolver as suas habilidades conversacionais de forma livre, como é possÃvel ter um bom nÃvel oral de Inglês? De fato é complicado, já que apenas a prática capacita o estudante e faz com que ele tenha autoconfiança suficiente para falar naturalmente em outro idioma. Não tendo tempo para desenvolver confiança e perder a vergonha, muitas pessoas se tornam excelentes em gramática, mas não tão boas na oralidade.Daà que muitos dos alunos da LOI English sejam pessoas com um bom nÃvel de Inglês, mas que, por diversos motivos, perderam contato com o Inglês ou não tiveram oportunidade de desenvolver o seu conhecimento da lÃngua de forma plena, com a atenção adequada para a produção e compreensão oral, bem como para a produção e compreensão do idioma escrito.
